Skyhand

In the early 1990s, ASICS crafted a nimble yet durable handball shoe called the Skyhand. After making its mark on the court, it was adopted as a casual sneaker, and in 2024, ASICS leaned into this lifestyle use, reissuing the Skyhand OG with modern features designed for optimal comfort.

The upper of the ASICS Skyhand is a suave blend of plush, pliable suede and high-quality synthetic leather, with a softly padded tongue and collar for all-round comfort. A large heel counter has been added to prevent rearfoot slippage and provide a secure fit, while perforations on the toe and flanks offer a touch of cooling ventilation. Internally, a cushioned sockliner has also been introduced for an even more premium underfoot feel.

A low-profile, stitched-in cupsole supports the Skyhand by incorporating cutting-edge compounds that deliver outstanding comfort. Alongside the wedge of reliable EVA cushioning in the heel is a section of the brand’s lightweight, energy-returning, shock-absorbing FlyteFoam Propel foam, which allows this decades-old shoe to perform like a contemporary sneaker. The classic gum rubber outsole is decorated with a dynamic tread pattern of concentric pivot circles in both forefoot and heel, with thick lugs through the rear midfoot that provide great traction on indoor surfaces as well as urban pavements.

Retaining its heritage sporty look, the ASICS Skyhand has plenty of retro appeal. Its sleek, streamlined shape and minimalist paneling produce a versatile esthetic, while eye-catching details like the leather sidewall stripes, wavy edged eyestay and ribbed heel bring added flair. An ASICS logo accents the tongue, with another one on the heel alongside bold Skyhand lettering. Lastly, a distinctive groove cut into the heel of the midsole allows the Skyhand to stand out from other vintage court shoes.

The ASICS Skyhand was released in 2024 through a sophisticated collaboration with high-end Danish furniture designers HAY. Led by co-founder Mette Hjort Hay, the partnership produced three suede-covered colorways in elegant pastel tones inspired by some of HAY’s own products. These were launched exclusively at the 3 Days of Design festival in Copenhagen in June 2024 ahead of general release models that came out through June and July. More HAY x ASICS editions were added in September, their gentle color-blocking based on the exquisite tones of the Danish brand’s Outline Pajamas.

From performance handball trainer to fashionable, comfort-focused sneaker, the ASICS Skyhand has always been a compelling piece of footwear, and now, with its modern updates, it is more supportive and stylish than ever before, making it a great shoe for daily wear.
