In the early 2010s, a growth in the popularity of barefoot running saw many brands develop minimalist training shoes. New Balance introduced its Minimus range, adding the Minimus Trail 10 in 2011 – a lightweight trail-running silhouette known for having a great fit and excellent support. In 2024, this low-profile design returned as the New Balance MT10.

The MT10 features a dual-layer mesh upper that is tough and durable while also allowing a good amount of breathability. Minimal suede strapping spans the forefoot and heel, with an additional panel protecting the toe to support the foot without restricting movement. The gusseted tongue and narrow last shape contribute towards the MT10’s sock-like fit, which makes it feel snug and secure. Extra room in the forefoot gives the toes space to splay, and a pull tab on the heel facilitates easy on and off.

A thin yet supportive sole unit provides the foundation of the New Balance MT10, its low-profile EVA foam midsole built firm and steady with a small heel-to-toe drop to offer a blend of underfoot protection and ground feel. Being low-to-the-ground, it is also very stable, and the gentle forefoot rocker subtly enhances propulsion at toe-off. The Vibram outsole incorporates a network of interconnected circular grip lugs, each with individual tread patterns that together offer an exceptional level of omnidirectional traction across various outdoor surfaces, from smooth roads to rugged trails. It does so without adding too much weight or reducing the shoe’s flexibility, thus allowing the foot to bend and flex naturally. It even wraps up over the toe and the sides of the forefoot to deliver extra support.

The MT10 has a captivating minimalist style that captures the essence of barefoot running. Its sleek, stripped-back upper is light on branding, with a slim N logo on the lateral sidewall, a small NB tongue patch and Vibram lettering on the lateral forefoot.

For its 2024 release, the New Balance MT10 was given a high-fashion boost by a luxurious collaboration with Japanese brand Issey Miyake, the avant-garde label creating a chic version incorporating elevated materials like premium leather. This set the tone for the barefoot silhouette, precipitating a string of experimental collaborative designs. Notable versions include a vintage-inspired model made with streetwear brand Basketcase and a suave edition by Los Angeles running company District Vision whose upper of rich brown tones is meant to reduce distractions for a more mindful experience of outdoor trails. In 2025, New Balance’s innovative Tokyo Design Studio crafted the unique MT10Tv1, giving it an even more stripped-back upper of smooth nubuck with a large rubber mudguard for a chic, fashion-forward look.
