Nike Air Max Plus Tiempo
3 articlesA compelling homage to two classic Nike silhouettes.
Air Max Plus Tiempo
Nike’s Tiempo football boot was first launched in 1994, after which it gradually became a beloved piece of sporting footwear, particularly in the early 2000s, when it was worn by a host of footballing stars. Four years after its release, Nike produced the Air Max Plus, which went on to establish itself as a streetwear classic. Decades later, in 2024, each silhouette was still popular in its own right, so to celebrate both, Nike combined them into one stylish sneaker called the Nike Air Max Plus Tiempo.
This captivating hybrid has the comfortable sole unit of the Air Max Plus as its foundation, complete with visible Air cushioning in the forefoot and heel, as well as the famous whale-fin shank supporting the midfoot. On the upper, the Tiempo’s sporting heritage meets the unique style of the Plus, with premium leather being used throughout, including on the mudguard and heel panel. The shiny plastic toe cap is the same as that found on the original AM Plus, and the hexagonal Tn Air logo appears in its usual locations on the heel and outsole.
Elegant stitching delineates where the TPU overlays would normally appear on a traditional Plus, giving the Air Max Plus Tiempo a suave esthetic. Meanwhile, the sidewall swooshes are taken from the Tiempo and as such stand out strikingly as they extend along each flank. However, the most powerful reference to the 90s football boot comes from the foldover leather tongue, which emulates those used on the original Tiempo and many of its later iterations. Another swoosh has been stamped into its center for a classy piece of branding, and behind it lies the tongue of the AM Plus.
When it was first announced in early 2024, the Air Max Plus Tiempo generated plenty of excitement, both because of the timing – it was the 30th anniversary of the original Tiempo and just a few months before the Euro 2024 football tournament – and because it honored two iconic Nike sneakers from the 1990s. The first colorway was a smooth black edition with elegant white swooshes that was followed by further compelling designs throughout the year. Next came a silvery gray sneaker with black highlights, after that was a dapper maroon and white iteration, and towards the end of 2024, a white and gold colorway inspired by Ronaldinho’s 2005 Tiempo football boot was revealed.
Through a luxurious blend of football and fashion, the Nike Air Max Plus Tiempo honors the past while offering a stylish new look for fans of sportswear and streetwear alike.
