Free Metcon 6
In the late 2010s, Nike combined the barefoot flexibility of its Free running technology with the staunch stability of the Metcon training shoe to create a single hybridized design that delivered the best of both. In the years since, it has evolved in a number of ways, and in 2024, the Nike Free Metcon 6 became the latest version of this highly versatile gym shoe.
There are several features that make the Free Metcon 6 suited to a wide range of training activities, not least its well-cushioned but pliable sole unit. Soft foam pads out the fore and midfoot areas, while a firmer foam has been added to the heel, allowing flexibility through the front half of the shoe and high levels of stability at the back.
Underfoot, the outsole is made from a durable rubber that can be spread quite thinly to reduce weight without compromising on traction. Extensive rubber pads run from heel to toe along its flat surface, providing comprehensive grip, and its laser-siped flex grooves, which are an essential part of any Free shoe, facilitate natural flexion of the foot.
The snug-fitting bootie-style upper is made from an engineered mesh that is exceptionally breathable. Flywire cables along the flanks connect to the shoe’s lacing system, offering excellent lockdown that prevents the foot from slipping without inhibiting movement. They also increase durability, as does the synthetic overlay on the toe, which is more rounded towards the medial side to assist with speed and agility.
For even more stability and protection, the midsole reaches up towards the ankle on each side. Additional padding covers the tongue and collar to bring comfort over the top of the foot, while a pair of pull tabs make it easy to get the shoe on and off.
Esthetically, the Nike Free Metcon 6 has a stylishly minimalist look, with small swooshes subtly placed on the forefoot and the lateral midsole. Performance is the focus on this expertly crafted sneaker as its practical features make it the ideal choice for those who enjoy blended workouts combining short runs, high intensity training, moderate weightlifting and cross-training.
